I was invited to speak at the 5x15 event series and the inaugural one held in Amsterdam. The series doesn’t what it says on the tin, 5 speakers each with 15 minutes to give a talk about a topic, in this case related to ‘The Future’. As fellow speaker Zing Tseng said during her talk, what do we mean when we talk about the future? The following day or 50 years ahead?
I used my 15 minutes to talk about our collective 15 minutes, the public realm and through that a suggestion of the failure of language, or rather the end of language as we know it to be what we deploy to signify and comprehend ourselves and for others to do the same. The crux of it being a kind of singularity could be seen to be well under way as we appear to have lost control of language, as language through its swirling technocratic dynamism, has arguably sped beyond the scope of semantic representation.
If you’re interested, I’ll be uploading a transcript of the talk shortly.
